The New Zealand Government has announced significant reforms to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa. These changes aim to help employers retain skilled talents and support New Zealand’s long-term economic growth.
Two New Pathways to Residence under SMC:
-
Skilled Work Experience Pathway
For ANZSCO Level 1–3 roles with at least 5 years of directly relevant experience (including 2 years in NZ at 1.1x the median wage).
2. Trades & Technician Pathway
For specific trade/technician roles with at least Level 4 relevant qualification and 4 years of relevant post-study experience (including 18 months in NZ, earning at least the median wage).
Other Key Highlights:
- NZ qualifications (e.g., NZ Master’s degree earning 6 points directly) will now carry more points – great news for international students.
- NZ work experience requirement will be reduced from 3 years to 2 years for most SMC pathways.
- Removal of the “higher wage at time of application” rule – you just need to maintain median wage throughout your qualifying period.
- Usual health, character, age and English requirements still apply.
What This Means for You:
These changes give more skilled workers and graduates the opportunity to secure residency in New Zealand
while recognising their contribution to the labour market.
