Thinking about studying in New Zealand? There’s never been a better time!
Exciting updates are here for international students in New Zealand or those planning to come. As part of the government’s new International Education Going for Growth Plan, several key immigration changes will come into effect on 3 November 2025. These changes are designed to make New Zealand a more attractive and supportive destination for your international education journey and subsequent permanent residence if eligible.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Increased Work Rights: The weekly in-study work limit for eligible students is rising from 20 to 25 hours. More time to gain experience and support your studies!
- More Students Eligible: Work rights are now extended to all tertiary students including those on approved exchange or Study Abroad programmes.
- New Residency Incentive for Master’s Students!
From August 2026, completing a NZ Master’s degree will grant you 6 points towards Skilled Migrant Category residency. This makes it significantly easier and faster to gain residency upon securing a job after graduation.
What This Means for You:
- Prospective Students:
Enjoy greater flexibility and earning potential to support your life and studies in NZ. Increased work rights will also bring you more chances to connect with permanent employment upon graduation.
If you are a highly educated graduate from a New Zealand university, you will have a faster and clearer residence pathway from Aug. 2026.
- Current Students:
If you hold a visa with a 20-hour work condition and wish to work the extra 5 hours, you will need to apply for a Variation of Conditions (VOC) at a fee of NZD $325. You can also choose to wait and have the new 25-hour condition applied when you next renew your visa.
Important Rule Change: Switching your school or course to a lower level? From 3 Nov. 2025, you must apply for a new student visa, not just a VOC.
Plan your future in New Zealand with confidence!
